Mary J. Hughes Walker was born on April 29, 1941 in Manhattan New York to the late Ivan Charles Hughes Sr. and the late Clara W. Blackstone Hughes Smith. She was 85 years old when she departed this life. Mary was educated in the New Orleans public school system. She was baptized at an early age at Pentecost Baptist Church by the late Rev. Guidry. From an early age she love to sing- Mary sang in the choir for many years and was a faithful president of the senior choir for many years. Singing was her gift from God and she used it in His service. One of her favorite hymns back in the day was “The wicked shall cease from troubling, and the weary shall be at rest, and all of the Saints of the ages are gonna sit at his feet and be blessed.” She sang many songs in her lifetime but on Saturday, May 23 when no one could hear her but the Lord, Mary sang her last song and the Lord heard her cry and dispatched an angel to bring her home.
Mary loved cooking and spending time with her family especially on special occasions like holidays and weddings.
Her greatest love was her grandchildren from the oldest to the youngest- she never found fault in anything they said or did- they were all grandma’s babies.
She was the beloved wife of the Late Calvin Walker Jr., together they had five children born of that union and Mary had five siblings that they raised after the death of Mary’s mother.
The road was not easy raising a combined family, but by God‘s grace and mercy they did an excellent job! Not only did they keep us together as a family, but they also kept us grounded in our faith, in our love of God and in our love of one another.
Mary leaves to cherish her memory: Her children, Shelia Walker Bryant, Kayrn Walker Williams(Leroy), Derek Walker(Denise), and Brett Walker, 14 grandchildren , 20 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson; as well as three sisters: Henrietta S. Brown Morris (James), Gwendolyn S. Winslow Roundtree and Lydia Smith Jackson , and two in-laws: Jacquelyn Walker Harris and Lionel Walker(Dorothy)
